We describe how our method uses frozen lakes as sensing surfaces, avoiding notable measurement biases of pluviometers and snow pillows and, most importantly, covering a very much larger surface area.
Assessment of Hydropower Potential using Glacio-Hydrological Degree Day Model: A Case Study of Budhi-Gandaki River Basin
The Glacio-hydrological Degree-day Model (GDM) is successfully setup to estimate discharge from where hydropower Potential of a glacierized Himalayan river basins was calculated.
Case study: Monitoring snout fluctuation and accelerating retreat of Passu Glacier in Hunza River Basin, Pakistan
This research examines Passu Glacier’s retreat from 2011-2024 using satellite images and field surveys, highlighting accelerated melting and retreat, emphasizing the need for continuous monitoring.
Warming-Driven Enhanced Glacial Melt Fuels Trace Metal Mobilization from Mountain Glaciers and Ice Sheets
This study reveals higher trace element mobility in mountain glaciers, particularly beneficial micronutrients like zinc, but also raises concerns about potential metal contamination downstream.
Modelling the impact of mining activities on the dynamics and evolution of a Kyrgyz glacier
We analyse how gold mining operations shortened Davydov Glacier by 2 km, reducing its volume by 160 million m³, and model its future evolution under both mining and no-mining scenarios.
Impact of climate change on snow cover in the Pyrenees, Alps, and Andes Mountains, derived from 40 years of Landsat data
Trends of snow cover based on high resolution 40 year Landsat time series for the Alps, Pyrenees, and Andes Mountains
Global mountain water yield dominated by rainfall runoff and the lower mountain reaches
Mountains cover only a small portion of earth’s river basins, but they provide one-third of the total runoff. Most of this runoff comes from rainfall at the lower mountain reaches.
Using novel lake-based snowfall measurements in the Alps, Himalayas and Rockies to assess and optimise the representation of snowfall in the MetUM regional atmospheric model at kilometre grid-scales
Snowfall prediction by regional climate models is challenging. This study optimizes the UK Met Office Unified Model using novel lake-based snowfall measurements from the Alps, Himalayas and Rockies.
Spatio-temporal assessment of areal fragmentation and volume of snow cover in the central Himalaya
The thick snow cover has been reduced at a higher rate in the last 30 years and replaced by thin snow cover expansion. Snow cover thinning and splitting is prominent, especially at lower altitudes.
Hyper-resolution decametric modelling of alpine catchments : development of a data processing framework to represent small scale-snow hydrological processes, over complex topography
Critical zone model ParFlow-CLM3.5, was applied to a highly instrumented alpine catchment with the aim to model water paths. Several snow scheme improvements were necessary and are evaluated.
