Urubamba mountain chain in the Andes of Southern Peru has several, unfortunately fast-melting glaciers, such as the snow peak of Veronica (5893 m), also called as Wayna Willka or Waqaywillka in Quechua. Polylepis sericea trees grow up to 4200 m of elevation in the upper parts of the steep south facing glacier valleys of the mountain chain. The forest patch distribution, mapped with high-resolution satellite images, relates to the topography.
