From Imagination to Manifestation: Young People’s Perspective of a Livable and Sustainable Future in the Alps and the Andes
Abstract
From Imagination to Manifestation: Young People’s Perspective of a Livable and Sustainable Future in the Alps and the Andes
Young people worldwide demonstrate their potential as key drivers of a sustainable future. They take responsibility and develop innovative solutions for challenges like climate change while considering well-being and health. To support this potential, inter- and transdisciplinary educational initiatives are needed to raise awareness and build action-oriented competencies. Collaboration with local communities, scientists, and policymakers is essential to achieving lasting change.
Mountain regions worldwide face similar climate change-related challenges, yet local communities perceive and envision their futures differently. In an inter- and transdisciplinary research project, we invited young people from two geographically and culturally distinct mountain regions—the Alps (Austria, Paznaun Valley) and the Andes (Peru, Santa Valley)—to develop their visions for a sustainable future.
Methodology
Using a multimethod approach, including future narratives and prototype design, we analyzed future scenarios created by students from Landeck (Austria) and Huaraz and Yungay (Peru). They envisioned a sustainable and livable future and then designed prototypes to illustrate their ideas. A qualitative content analysis of these narratives and Design Jam results was conducted to extract key themes and compare perspectives.
Results & Discussion
The analysis reveals both similarities and differences between the two groups. Peruvian students emphasized well-being, personal relationships, and connection to nature, whereas Austrian students focused more on technological innovations and infrastructure. However, both groups strongly desire greater participation in climate policy, well-being, and sustainable development. Educational initiatives that foster collaboration between youth and diverse stakeholders are key to transforming awareness into actionable competencies. Participatory formats like the Local Goals Design Jam empower young people to engage in shaping their environment and equip them with skills to advocate for a sustainable future in mountain regions.
