The issue of the resignification and reuse of abandoned spaces is also a topical issue within the Mòcheno linguistic minority community located in Trentino, Italy In this valley there are places that played a role within the traditional economy and that are now deprived of use and yet hold a special place in the community’s imagination. The presence of the Mòcheno Cultural Institute (Bersntoler Kulturinstitut), founded in 1987, which has the role of supporting the local language and cultural context, plays a fundamental role in this sense. Indeed, since its foundation, the Institute has carried out numerous projects to restore buildings in the area in order to return them to the community as open-air museums and also involving social actors present in the area, such as artisans, museum guides or informants. However, the re-designing of spaces is also possible thanks to the continuous research and enrichment of the documentary and photographic archives that have been built over time and that allow for the constant involvement of interested parties to find information material on the customs of the community, thus constituting a collective heritage of reference for the local identity. A special function is also played by the role of toponymy in Mòcheno language, which indicates a process of re-appropriation of places. Some case studies of both permanent and temporary reuse of spaces by the community will be presented and the role of the Institute within this reuse process will be specified.
