The Himalaya-Karakoram–Hindukush (HKH) region, which hosts one of the largest glacier systems outside the polar zones, is a critical source of water for millions of people. However, glaciers in the HKH respond unevenly to climate variability. Notably, the Karakoram region displays the “Karakoram Anomaly”, a pattern of glacier stability or slight mass gain, in contrast to the widespread retreat seen elsewhere in the region. To better understand glacier–climate interactions in the HKH, a glacier parameterization scheme has been developed and incorporated into the REMO regional climate model. This scheme, applied in the HKH, simulates dynamic glacier mass balance and area changes at the sub-grid level, using a detailed regional glacier inventory for initialization. Despite the region’s complex topography and limited observations, REMO simulations align well with observed mass balance trends, including the Karakoram Anomaly. The model also reproduces equilibrium line altitudes, though with some underestimation. Overall, REMO effectively captures the coupled dynamics between glacier changes and climate variability, making it a valuable tool for high-resolution climate impact studies across the HKH.
