Forests in changing environments

Thematic Frame

Climate change is projected to present significant challenges to forests worldwide in the coming years. Rising global temperatures are expected to lead to more frequent and intense heatwaves, prolonged droughts, and reduced snow cover, all of which will place enormous stress on forest ecosystems. These changes threaten not only the health of individual trees but also the complex interactions within forest communities that support biodiversity, regulate water cycles, and sequester carbon. Forests, as we know them today, may be fundamentally altered, with some species unable to adapt quickly enough to the changing conditions.

Understanding the full scope of these threats and developing strategies to mitigate their impact is critical for ensuring the resilience of forests in the face of climate change. In our sessions, we will explore the diverse range of challenges posed by climate change, from its effects on tree physiology and health to its broader influence on forest ecosystems and services. We will examine approaches at multiple scales, from the individual tree level to entire forest biomes, considering both scientific insights and practical management strategies. Our discussions will focus on how forests can be protected, managed, and restored in a warming world, ensuring their survival and continued role in sustaining life on Earth.
