Description

The recent IPCC report affirms that anthropogenic pressures have led to rapid environmental degradation and climate change, affecting biodiversity and ecosystems. Mountain ecosystems are more sensitive and vulnerable to global changes. These areas are shaped by specific abiotic factors under which narrow niches of species adapt and strive. Global warming and the increased frequency of extreme weather events affect every aspect of the life cycle of species. From the alpine habitats to those in the bottom valley, the alteration of the community structure and the biogeochemical cycles is evident. In addition, the ongoing decline of biodiversity could reduce ecological redundancy, thus making mountain ecosystems less resilient to new and continued factors of stress. Impact on all life forms may thereby also feedback the climate system through modifying carbon, water and energy exchanges between mountain ecosystems and the atmosphere.
